My computer had slowed down due to so much malware, etc. I decide to give SpyHunter a go.
They wanted to charge me and I tried to leave the site. Up popped a "special" amount. I couldn't resist it.
Pros
It scans daily and removes all ads and malware I especially like that it removes the pesky PHP invaders. Those are harder to remove.
Cons
It sometimes pops up when I don't want it to "scan". I'm just learning how to live with it and use settings.

Good software. Needs more work
Overall it was good. The software works. It is not very demanding on the PC. Finds things that other anti-virus systems don't.
Pros
It is good software. It found stuff that my regular anti-virus software didn't BUT none of these things was actually a big problem. Mostly cookies, adware, and stuff like that. There are several nice and slick things about it.
Cons
You can't scan a file individually. I was very surprised about this fact. I contacted support and they confirmed it. I am not willing to scan an entire partition in order to find out if a 5MB file is suspicious or not. Not sure why they didn't figure this would be an extremely useful feature but they didn't add it. I can easily do it with my main anti-virus suite.
The price is high for what it offers. I decided to try it and see if there's anything fishy on my PC. There wasn't. Doesn't make sense to pay for 2 anti-virus systems or have them take up valuable PC resources.

Cons
It did NOTHING that it said that it did (for free). After waiting forever for the scan, it agreed to fix "privacy" issues for free, but insisted upon a substantial fee to fix the malware (which is NOT how it is advertised--"can fix this malware for FREE!!!"). SpyHunter (software)
Anti-spyware program
For other uses, see Spy Hunter (disambiguation).
SpyHunter is an anti-spywarecomputer program for the Microsoft Windows (Windows XP and later) operating system. It is designed to remove malware, such as trojan horses, computer worms, rootkits, and other malicious software.
Details[edit]
SpyHunter is currently at version 5, and receives daily definition updates. SpyHunter has a free version, which allows the user to scan their computer. Purchase is required to remove found malware.[1] EnigmaSoftware also offers a service on its website called "ESG MalwareTracker", it shows the most infected countries where SpyHunter has detected malware.[2]
In the paid version, the user is able to receive support from a built-in HelpDesk.[1] SpyHunter also has a custom fix from the Spyware Helpdesk team.[3]
Critical reception[edit]
- PC Magazine gave SpyHunter a 2 out of 5 star rating in March , saying it was good at spyware detection, but complained about the performance and usability.[4]
- PC Magazine gave SpyHunter a "GOOD" rating, 3 out of 5 stars, in March The reviewer concluded, "Enigma SpyHunter 4 does what it promises, eliminating active malware and killing malware that launches at startup. But competitors deliver much more."[1]
Lawsuits[edit]
In February , Enigma Software filed a lawsuit against Bleeping Computer, a computer support website. It alleged that the latter engaged in a smear campaign with the purpose of driving potential customers away from SpyHunter to affiliate competing products.[5] In turn, Bleeping Computer filed a lawsuit against Enigma Software also for an alleged smear campaign.[6] In March , Enigma Software announced in a press release that a settlement had been reached in the lawsuit against Bleeping Computer, and that both cases would be dismissed.[7]
In October , Enigma Software filed a lawsuit against popular security software vendor, Malwarebytes, for anti-competitive behavior. The lawsuit arose after Malwarebytes' software began targeting SpyHunter as a potentially unwanted program.[8] On November 7, , Enigma's case was dismissed by the US District Court.[9] Engima appealed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the court reversed the lower court's decision.[10] A panel of judges voted that, "We hold that the phrase "otherwise objectionable" does not include software that the provider finds objectionable for anti-competitive reasons."[10] Despite this, Malwarebytes won the case on its merits[11] after the Supreme Court denied their writ of certiorari on the immunity issue.[12]
Controversies[edit]
SpyHunter is often labeled an Potentially Unwanted Program due to its misleading results of always showing infections, including on clean computers, and injects tracking cookies into a users browser, raising concern whether it is legitimate or not. The company also floods web search results when searching for a specific threat, linking a download to SpyHunter, even if the product is not able to remove it.

SpyHunter Review Alternatives
SpyHunter is a malware detection and removal system that is available for Windows and macOS. The tool gets its name from its original purpose, which was to seek out spyware. However, it now detects all manner of malware, including Trojans and tools used to facilitate manual and automated advanced persistent threats.
The SpyHunter system is one of many malware packages available. But, effectively, this is an antimalware service, so it is up against the products of large multi-national organizations who have spent large budgets evolving the software category by applying AI tools and distributed architectures. So, does SpyHunter stand up to the competition?
About SpyHunter
SpyHunter is the main product of Enigma Software Group (ESG). The About page on the Enigma Software site explains that the group is a collection of affiliated companies. The umbrella organization is registered as EnigmaSoft Limited, and it is based in Dublin, Ireland. The company also has offices in Kaunas, Lithuania, and Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The company also markets data protection systems under Cyclonis Ltd, which operates out of the same offices in Dublin. Both companies are private and run by Richard Scarlata and Niall Shanahan.
The company provides a feed of new malware discoveries, such as ransomware developments, on its Facebook page, and it also runs a Twitter feed.
What does SpyHunter do?
SpyHunter detects and removes malware. A free version of the tool will just detect malware but only remove it after a hour delay.
The functions of SpyHunter include:
- Malware detection and removal
- Live malware monitoring and quarantining
- A vulnerability scanner
These three modules clean up a computer, harden it against future attacks, and maintain controls on new software.
Malware detection and removal
The types of malware that SpyHunter will detect include:
- Trojans
- Ransomware
- Worms
- Viruses
- Rootkits
- Adware
- Spyware
- Keyloggers
- Potentially unwanted programs (PUPs)
As well as looking at the software that runs on a computer, SpyHunter identifies the tracker libraries and cookies that get continually downloaded by websites. Many of these will compromise your privacy. SpyHunter will offer you the option of removing specific, intrusive cookies.
Live software controls
Once it has swept a device, the service remains live, triggering an alert if new malware hits the computer while quarantining that suspicious software.
The system also allows on-demand scans. A scan can be directed at specific folders or drives, and it is also possible to exclude areas of the disk or directory structure from scans.
Vulnerability scanning
The system also includes a vulnerability scanner that assesses the statuses of legitimate software for known exploits used by hackers.
SpyHunter developers have also created a heuristics system that can spot potential problems, known as zero-day threats. These work through the logical consequences of a combination of hardware and software settings that could provide a way in for hackers and malware.
Resolutions to the discoveries arising from a vulnerability scan are usually required to update software, apply an operating system patch, or change system settings. Unfortunately, these remediation steps are not automated.
User controls
All scans produce logs, and these are available for viewing. The actions were taken by the software when it encounters a malware instance can be customized. By default, the system will quarantine suspicious objects. These can be cleared manually and restored or approved for automated removal.
Some malware, such as rootkits, can get so deep into the operating system that they are almost possible to remove without reinstalling the OS. However, other malware includes persistence modules that will reinstall the code as soon as it is removed. These events require particular expertise to remove. The SpyHunter package provides access to a Help Desk that gives you the services of a cybersecurity expert who will manually identify and permanently remove the malware.
SpyHunter deployment options
SpyHunter is available in two formats. The first of these is SpyHunter 5, which runs on the Windows operating system. The second is SpyHunter for Macs, which is designed to run on macOS.

SpyHunter plans and prices
SpyHunter is charged for 6-month subscription cycles. You pay every six months in advance, and the system sets up a repeat billing system, so you will be charged automatically for the next six months once your paid-for service expires.
The price for a 6-month subscription for one device is:
- SpyHunter 5: $
- SpyHunter for Mac: $
A license for multiple devices gets a discount, with a more significant discount for higher numbers of devices per order. The discount rates are:
- 2 – 5 devices: percent
- 6 – 10 devices: 50 percent
- 20 – devices: percent
- All options include a day money-back guarantee for the first subscription.
There is a free version of SpyHunter available.
Free SpyHunter
You can access a free version of SpyHunter from the EnigmaSoft website. Clicking on the download button for the free version, get an installer downloaded onto your computer. After clicking on the installer, you will be asked to agree to the End Under License Agreement, and then the installation begins.
Once the installation completes, the application for SpyHunter will open automatically.
The system inventory all software and services installed on the device and “whitelists” them. This effectively establishes a list of legitimate software on the device.
After scanning regular software and services, the package hunts through Web-related objects on your computer. These are trackers and cookies. You will be surprised by the number of these tracking systems that SpyHunter discovers.
The system gives a description of each malware instance that it encounters.
SpyHunter strengths and weaknesses
The SpyHunter system is very competent, although it is not the product of one of the big brands. Moreover, its combination of malware protection and vulnerability scanning gives the user a solid chance of avoiding the plague of inconveniences and threats that hackers worldwide inflict on all computer owners.
We assessed the SpyHunter system and derived these points:
Pros:
- A good combination of security functions
- Easy to install
- Includes a vulnerability scanner
- Identifies Web marketing trackers
- Recognizes legitimate software
- Employs heuristics to identify potential system weaknesses
Cons:
- Not a well-known brand
- The initial scan takes a very long time
Alternatives to SpyHunter
Although SpyHunter offers good protection, you might prefer the security of a product offered by the largest cybersecurity software providers. According to Datanyze, the market leaders in the Endpoint Protection market as of September were:
- Trend Micro Apex One: percent
- Symantec Endpoint Protection: percent
- McAfee Total Protection: percent
However, size is not everything, and there are other important factors to consider when selecting an anti-malware package.
What should you look for in an alternative to SpyHunter?
We reviewed the market for endpoint protection systems like SpyHunter and assessed the options based on the following criteria:
- A package that combines several cybersecurity tools
- A live threat intelligence feed
- AI processes to block zero-day attacks
- Services for home use as well as business packages
- An automated system that will deal with problems as well as identify them
- A no-cost assessment opportunity through a free trial or demo system
- A service that offers value for money
As SpyHunter can be used for homes and businesses, the range of alternatives is extensive. Many brands focus on private or commercial customers, so we needed to cover both scenarios to cover replacements for SpyHunter fully.
Here is our list of the five best alternatives to SpyHunter:
- CrowdStrike Falcon (FREE TRIAL) is a range of cybersecurity services. These services are then packaged into bundles. The lowest bundle offered by CrowdStrike is Falcon Pro. This offers Falcon Prevent, which is an endpoint protection system, aka a next-gen anti-virus. The Prevent module needs to be installed on each protected endpoint. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. This service uses AI techniques to spot zero-day attacks, so it isn’t dependent on a signature database, and it can continue protecting offline devices. Businesses can improve this protection by moving up to the Falcon Enterprise or Falcon Premium bundles, which add on cloud-based coordination of all Prevent instances. In addition, you can get a day free trial of Falcon Prevent.
- Trend Micro Apex One This is the leading AV globally. It implements AI procedures to work out what is regular activity on an endpoint and what is either malicious user actions or malware. The system doesn’t need a list of malicious processes to look out for because it looks out for potentially damaging actions, such as writing to the registry. This flexible approach is ideal for blocking zero-day attacks. If Apex One discovers a system or software weakness, it will isolate that element until a patch or solution becomes available. Then, obvious malware is killed and removed. Apex One for Business operates in the cloud but requires an agent to be installed on the endpoint. This is available for Windows and Windows Server. The Home Edition installs on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and ChromeOS.
- Symantec Endpoint Protection This package is available in two levels, with Endpoint Protection as the lower package and Endpoint Detection and Response as a higher plan. Symantec is a brand aimed at businesses. It has been through some significant changes lately, being taken over by Broadcom, which is gradually rebranding the Symantec stable to its own identity. Broadcom has also changed the product’s name – it is now Symantec End-user Endpoint Security, and the EDR is called Symantec Endpoint Security Complete. These systems use AI to spot anomalous behavior both in user actions and software processes rather than just looking for a list of known malware file names. This package is available for installation on Windows, Windows Server, Linux, and macOS. There is also a cloud-based version that requires an agent to be installed on-premises on Windows and Windows Server.
- McAfee Total Protection This package is aimed at home users with plans for couples and families to cover multiple devices and a straight-up single-device license. The bundle includes a Web safety service that scans Web pages for malicious code, blocks trackers, and provides a VPN service with the AV. The plans also include a password manager, a file shredder, a firewall, and PC optimization systems. The software for McAfee is available for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Unfortunately, there isn’t a free trial, but McAfee offers a day money-back guarantee.
- Bitdefender GravityZone This package is designed for businesses, and there is also a version for home users. It includes a long list of services, including an AV system, a backup service, a vulnerability scanner, and data privacy protection. The full service provides excellent protection against ransomware and intruders as well as traditional malware. This is a cloud-based service, but endpoints require an agent program to get enrolled in protection. Those endpoints can be running Windows, macOS, or Linux. You can get a 1-month free trial of Bitdefender GravityZone. Home users should consider Bitdefender Total Security. This includes a firewall, a system optimizer, a vulnerability scanner, a VPN, intrusion detection, anti-phishing, and anti-fraud protection, plus a data backup system. This package is available for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, and you can get it on a day free trial. Bitdefender Free Edition is another option for Windows, macOS, and Android.

SpyHunter 5 Review
AttentionBefore you read this post, I highly recommend you check out my resources page for access to the tools and services I use to not only maintain my system but also fix all my computer errors, by clicking here! In this SpyHunter 5 review I explain why this tool is something you should consider for your system.
One of the most prevalent and annoying issues that we all face while using our computer systems is malware. These malicious files are typically designed to masquerade as legitimate programs. SpyHunter 5 is a program created by Enigma Software Group for the purpose of finding and removing these malicious files from your computer. But the real question in all of this is whether SpyHunter is really worth your time.
One of the most common questions that individuals ask when SpyHunter 5 is mentioned is whether or not it’s a safe or legitimate program. The perception is that more and more people are stumbling upon this powerful program but are not sure whether the program can be trusted. This feeling is understandable, as I’ve mistakenly installed malicious programs in the past, despite my advanced computer expertise.
So I will start this SpyHunter 5 review off by saying that SpyHunter 5 is a program that I have personally used to rid my system of malicious files, and it worked better than anything else I’ve ever used, till date. SpyHunter is, without a doubt, a legitimate program, developed by Enigma Software, and has been in the market for more than a decade now. Enigma is consistently updating their internet security program with new virus definitions, to keep it fresh and on guard for the latest viruses. Taking a peek on their official website, you will be able to find some really useful information on trending malicious files, in addition to tips on how to safeguard your machine.
My Experience
Noting my personal experiences of this tool for this SpyHunter 5 review, I must say that computer security is one aspect of my machine that I do not take lightly, so I always ensure that my internet security software is working and most up-to-date.
That said, when it comes to SpyHunter 5, my first real experience with this tool came some time back when my system was infected with a very dangerous virus file. This malicious file hijacked my desktop and prevented me from using the protomill.pt (Uninstall a Program) Windows component. This meant, not only was I infected, but I was also unable to remove the program which initially brought the virus that infected my computer.
Unbeknownst to me, I accidently installed a fake program, which inadvertently led to the infection. The sad reality is that, this is how a great many users get viruses onto their systems.
As a result of my situation, I went about running various scans of my system, using a number of different virus scanners, but all to no avail. This is when I stumbled upon SpyHunter 5, I’d heard some good things about it, so I thought maybe I’d give it a try, after all, I had very little to lose at that point.
So I downloaded SpyHunter and installed it on my computer. SpyHunter runs a quick scan immediately after you install it. A quick scan in name only, I might add, because it was very extensive, taking in excess of an hour to complete. With SpyHunter, everything was seamless and easy to use, as the program comes with a very intuitive interface. Everyone, even those fairly new to computing, should have very little difficulty using this program.
After SpyHunter 5 completed its first scan, it successfully located the virus in addition to various other malicious files and programs. After the scan was complete, I simply clicked on the Fix Threats button, and it did the rest.
After a couple minutes and a full system restart, my computer was completely free of the virus. But that wasn’t the best part of it, the best part I would say, was the fact that my Windows component protomill.pt (Uninstall a Program) had started working again.
That would be the first time that I’ve ever had an antimalware tool repair a Windows component.

When it comes to this SpyHunter 5 review, the many different features that puts it head and shoulders above its competition, must be noted. One of the best features of this tool is its proprietary rootkit detection. Rootkits are a specific type of malicious file that disguises itself as an important system file. Such files then become near impossible for you to remove, as the Windows operating system mistakenly protects the file.
Such malicious files cannot be removed while Windows is running.
SpyHunter 5 comes with its own unique boot operating system that it can use to effectively eliminate these rootkit infections. It does this by restarting your computer and booting into its own operating system so that it can remove the file.
SpyHunter 5 also comes with scheduling, allowing the end user to schedule weekly; monthly or even daily scans of their computer.
In addition to the above features, users are also given access to the following:
An antimalware tool that is capable of detecting multiple types of malicious files, such as worms, Trojans, cookies, adware, key-loggers and much more. Excellent customer support. If you’re having any problems with your system, you can contact Enigma, through their Help Desk, and they will personally help you fix it. A ‘Compact OS’, which I have already touched on, allowing SpyHunter to remove those dangerous rootkits from your system. Consistent virus definition updates. This is one of the most important aspects of any internet security tool. Daily updates will ensure that your computer is safe from all and any new threat. System Guard, which will detect and prevent any crucial changes to your system without your express say so. Custom malware repairs – this is a feature that goes hand in hand with the Help Desk feature. As the Help Desk feature allows the end user to interact with Enigma who can then create a custom fix for your computer, which will repair the problem you’re currently experiencing. Ease of Use
When it comes to ease of use for this SpyHunter 5 review, I’d say I find the tool to be very intuitive, logical and cleanly designed, for both the advanced and basic users.
Every feature of this program can be accessed from the buttons on the left-hand side navigation, a formula that we should all be familiar with and one that works very well. The most commonly used features such as Malware Scan, Registry Scan, DNS Settings and System Guards, are located higher up the page, while Spyware Helpdesk and Settings are located beneath them.
System Performance
This portion of the SpyHunter 5 review covers running a full scan of your system using the tool; I noticed a dip in system performance, which wasnt too noticeable; but such is the case with all antivirus tools. However, when the program is not scanning your system, you’d never even know it was running.
This is much more than I can say for the many scanners I’ve used over the years and a major plus for this program.
Customer Support
SpyHunter 5 comes with its own built-in helpdesk support facility. If for some odd reason SpyHunter is unable to repair your system, it’s possible for you to arrange an appointment with their helpdesk, where their technical team can create a custom malware removal plan for your computer. This process works by the SpyHunter program sending a diagnostic report to Enigma, which they will then use to work out how best to fix the problem with your system.
This is the one feature I feel that puts SpyHunter above all the other antimalware tools I’ve used in the past.

It is a safe and proficient tool that will make short work of worms, viruses, adware, spyware, Trojans and much more, on your system.
