Media Player Classic (MPC), Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC), and Media Player Classic - Black Edition (MPC-BE) are a family of free and open-source, compact, lightweight, and customizable media players for 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Windows. The original MPC, along with the MPC-HC fork, mimic the simplistic look and feel of Windows Media Player 6.4, but provide most options and features available in modern media players. Variations of the original MPC and its forks are standard media players in the K-Lite Codec Pack and the Combined Community Codec Pack.

This project is now principally maintained by the community at the Doom9 forum. The active forks are Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC) by clsid2 (same developer known as clsid responsible for MPC 6.4.9.1), and Media Player Classic - Black Edition (MPC-BE) by aleksoid.

Media Player Classic[edit]

Japanese MPC 6.4.8.3 audio playback on Wine

The original Media Player Classic was created and maintained by a programmer named "Gabest" who also created PCSX2 graphics plugin GSDX. It was developed as a closed-source application, but later relicensed as free software under the terms of the GPL-2.0-or-later license. MPC is hosted under the project at SourceForge.net. The project itself is something of an umbrella organization for works by Gabest.

Media Player Classic development stalled in May 2006. Gabest, the main developer of the original version, stated in March 2007 that development of Media Player Classic is not dead but that he was unable to work on it.[5] MPC 6.4.9.0, released March 20, 2006, is the final official version.

Forks[edit]

Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1[edit]

In August 2007, an unofficially patched and updated build became available, from Doom9 member clsid, hosted under the project at SourceForge.net. Known as Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1, it was meant for fixing bugs and updating outdated libraries; its branch's development has been inactive since 2011. MPC 6.4.9.1 Revision 107, released February 14, 2010, is the final release version.[6][7] The community at the Doom9 forum has since further continued the project with MPC-HC.

MPC-HC on Doom9 (active fork by clsid)

A fork, called Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC), adds new features, as well as fixes bugs and updates libraries.[10] It also updated the license to GPL-3.0-or-later.

MPC-HC updates the original player and adds many useful functionalities including the option to remove tearing, additional video decoders (in particular H.264, VC-1 and MPEG-2 with DirectX Video Acceleration support), Enhanced Video Renderer support, and multiple bug fixes. There is also a 64 bit-version of Media Player Classic - Home Cinema for the various Windows x64 platforms. MPC-HC requires at least Windows XP Service Pack 3.

As of version 1.4.2499.0, MPC-HC implemented color management support, an uncommon feature that nearly all video players on Microsoft Windows lack.[11] Windows 8 support was introduced in version 1.6.5.[12] Beginning with version 1.6.6 the stable releases are signed.[13]

Apart from stable releases as published, nightly builds are also publicly available.[14][15] MPC-HC is also distributed in the PortableApps format.[16] MPC-HC 1.7.8 released in 2015 was built with the MediaInfoLib 0.7.71.

MPC-HC 1.7.1 added support for HEVC format.

MPC-HC 1.7.13 now requires SSE2 supporting CPU and no longer runs on Intel Pentium III or AMD Athlon XP.

MPC-HC 1.7.13 is the final version and the program has been officially discontinued as of July 16, 2017, due to a shortage of active developers with C/C++ experience.[17] Its source code on GitHub was last updated on August 27, 2017, a month and a half after the official final version.[18]

Updated fork[edit]

MPC-HC 1.7.xx Maintenance versions released, bug fixes.

MPC-HC 1.8.xx Youtube-DL integration, maintenance, bug fixes.

MPC-HC 1.9.xx Black Theme added, modern toolbars, better subtitle handling, video preview on seekbar, improved translations, various small features, maintenance, bug fixes.

Updated builds of MPC-HC, a fork from the same developer (known as clsid2 on GitHub/SourceForge) responsible for MPC 6.4.9.1, started appearing in January 2018. This fork contains updated internal codecs (LAV Filters), AV1 support, youtube-dl integration, a new dark theme, video preview on seekbar, support for MPC Video Renderer, A-B Repeat, subtitle performance improvements, updates to some other external components, other improvements, and many bug fixes;[19][20] support for Windows XP was also dropped in these builds.[19] Binary releases are available,[8] as well as source code.[21]

Media Player Classic - Black Edition (MPC-BE) is a fork of MPC and MPC-HC. It moved away from MPC's aim to mimic the look and feel of Windows Media Player with updated player controls and provides additional features on top of MPC-HC such as a video preview tooltip when hovering the mouse cursor over the seek bar, as known from video platforms such as YouTube and Dailymotion, though many of these features, including the video preview on seekbar, were added to MPC-HC at a later date.[24][25]

MPC-BE, however, doesn't include LAV filters by default, making it less efficient than MPC-HC for decoding. This is most noticeable with higher resolution files, newer codecs, or on lower end hardware.[26]

Player development began in February 2011. Developers used a modification of MPC-HC made by a programmer nicknamed "bobdynlan".

The first version (1.0.1.0) was released on September 12, 2012.[27]

Starting with version 1.5.0, MPC-BE no longer supports Windows XP.[28]

MPC-BE version 1.5.1 and newer require SSE2 supporting CPU and no longer run on Intel Pentium III or AMD Athlon XP.[29]

Nightly builds are also available.[23][24]

Media formats and features[edit]

In this section Media Player Classic and MPC refer to both the original MPC and its forks, unless otherwise specified.

Media Player Classic is capable of VCD, SVCD, and DVD playback without installation of additional software or codecs. MPC has built-in codecs for MPEG-2 video with support for subtitles and codecs for LPCM, MP2, 3GP, AC3, and DTS audio; along with native playback of the Matroskacontainer format. MPC also contains an improved MPEG splitter that supports playback of VCDs and SVCDs using its VCD/SVCD/XCD Reader. On October 30, 2005, Gabest added MP4 and MPEG-4 Timed Text support.[30]Adobe Flash movies (SWF) can be played and frames jumped to.[31]

Supported media formats within the latest builds of MPC-HC and MPC-BE have been considerably expanded compared to the original MPC, as these builds are bundled with iterations of libavcodec and libavformat. MPC-HC version 1.7.0 and newer utilize LAV filters,[32] while MPC-BE uses FFmpeg directly.[33] Consequently, they support all formats from those libraries.

MPC-HC is also one of the first media players to support Dolby Atmos audio natively.

MPC can use an INI file in its application folder,[34] making it a portable application.

DirectShow[edit]

Media Player Classic is primarily based on the DirectShow architecture and therefore automatically uses installed DirectShow decoding filters. For instance, after the open source DirectShow decoding filter ffdshow has been installed, fast and high quality decoding and postprocessing of the MPEG-4 ASP, H.264, and Flash Video formats is available in the original MPC. MPC-HC and MPC-BE, however, can play videos in these formats directly without ffdshow.

MPC-HC and MPC-BE also provide DXVA support for compatible Intel, NVIDIA, and ATI/AMD video cards when using a compatible codec. This provides hardware-acceleration for playback.

In addition to DirectShow, MPC can also use the QuickTime, RealPlayer, and SHOUTcast codecs and filters (if installed on the computer) to play their native files.[35] Though some of these files may play without the external codecs or filters installed. Alternatively, QuickTime Alternative and Real Alternative can be used in place of their player installations for expanded support of their respective file formats.

TV tuners[edit]

MPC supports playback and recording of television if a supported TV tuner is installed.

clsid2/mpc-hc

Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC) is a free and open-source video and audio player for Windows. MPC-HC is based on the original Guliverkli project and contains many additional features and bug fixes.

Development Status

The player is mature, stable, reliable, and already provides a huge amount of features.

Due to a lack of active developers, the player is currently in maintenance mode. This means that there are no direct plans for adding any big new features. Development is currently limited to small bug fixes and updates. However, external developers can still contribute additional fixes and new functionality. In fact, several people have already helped to give the player some new functionality and other improvements.

The internal codecs are developed in an external project (LAV Filters). That project is still actively maintained, and MPC-HC will be updated periodically with the latest codecs. Same applies to code/files from other external projects that are used by MPC-HC, such as MediaInfo.

If you are a programmer and want to help improve MPC-HC, then you can do so by submitting a pull request containing your patches.

Overview of features

A lot of people seem to be unaware of some of the awesome features that have been added to MPC-HC in the past years. Here is a list of useful options and features that everyone should know about:

  • Dark interface
Menu > View > Dark Theme
When using dark theme it is also possible to change the height of the seekbar and size of the toolbar buttons.
    Options > Advanced
  • Video preview on the seekbar
Options > Tweaks > Show preview on seek bar
  • Adjust playback speed
Menu > Play > Playback rate
The buttons in the player that control playback rate take a 2x step by default. This can be customized to smaller values (like 10%):
Options > Playback > Speed step
Adjusting playback speed works best with the SaneAR audio renderer. This also has automatic pitch correction.
Options > Playback > Output > Audio Renderer
  • MPC-HC can remember playback position, so you can resume from that point later
    Options > Player > History
  • You can quickly seek through a video with Ctrl + Mouse Scrollwheel.
  • You can jump to next/previous file in a folder by pressing PageUp/PageDown.
  • You can perform automatic actions at end of file. For example to go to next file or close player.
Options > Playback > After Playback (permanent setting)
Menu > Play > After Playback (for current file only)
  • A-B repeat
You can loop a segment of a video. Press [ and ] to set start and stop markers.
  • You can rotate/flip/mirror/stretch/zoom the video
    Menu > View > Pan&Scan
This is also easily done with hotkeys (see below).
  • There are lots of keyboard hotkeys and mouse actions to control the player. They can be customized as well.
    Options > Player > Keys
Tip: there is a search box above the table.
  • You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites
Put yt-dlp.exe in the MPC-HC installation folder.
Then you can open website URLs in the player: Menu > File > Open File/URL
You can even download those videos: Menu > File > Save a copy
Tip: to be able to download in best quality with yt-dlp/youtube-dl, it is recommended to also put ffmpeg.exe in the MPC-HC folder.
Several YDL configuration options are found here: Options > Advanced
This includes an option to specify the location of the .exe in case you don't want to put it in MPC-HC folder.
Note: instead of yt-dlp.exe you can also use youtube-dl.exe. I do however recommend using yt-dlp because that works better and has active development, while youtube-dl development is currently inactive.
Note 2: You also need to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
  • Play HDR video
This requires using madVR or MPC Video Renderer.
After installation these renderers can be selected here:
    Options > Playback > Output
  • Ability to search for and download subtitles, either automatically or manually (press D):
    Options > Subtitles > Misc
  • Besides all these (new) features, there have also been many bugfixes and internal improvements in the player in the past years that give better performance and stability. It also has updated internal codecs. Support was added for CUE sheets, WebVTT subtitles, etc.

System Requirements

  • Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10 / 11

Media Player Classic - Black Edition

Media Player Classic - Black Edition is a stylish and competent version of the Media Player Classic application which was a project created to mimic the original Media Player on Windows systems.

The media player itself contains a number of different features, namely the ability to play a wide variety of video and audio formats.

After loading a video file, right-clicking it will pop up a context menu with access many of the main features of Media Player Classic - Black Edition: zooming, pan and scan, navigation, filters, shares, audio, subtitles, rendering settings, etc. The subtitle system also provides a search function of online subtitle databases.

Though Media Player Classic has been overtaken by other open source multimedia solutions like VLC Media Player, Media Player Classic - Black Edition sticks true to its fan-base and continues to develop improvements and additional features.

Overall, Media Player Classic - Black Edition presents a beautiful user interface along with all of the best features you'd expect from even a commercial application, even superseding paid features.

Media Player Classic - Black Edition 1.6.4.0 on 32-bit and 64-bit PCs

This download is licensed as freeware for the Windows operating system on either a laptop or desktop PC from media players without restrictions. Media Player Classic BE 1.6.4.0 is available to all software users as a free download for Windows. As an open source project, you are free to view the source code and distribute this software application freely.

Compatibility with this media player software may vary, but will generally run fine under Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 7 on either a 32-bit or 64-bit setup. Depending on the options available for downloading, separate versions may be available from The MPC-BE Team depending on the target system architecture.

Media Player Classic Download Free for Windows

MPC-HC Or MPC-BE: Media Player Classic Free Download

There are three media player classic names on online that might confuse users a lot as to the matter of downloading. Which is the rightful MPC shall we take? First let's start from MPC.
Media Player Classic, AKA, MPC is like the father/pedigree of many sons including powerful KMplayer, PotPlayer, MPC-HC and MPC-BE, meaning these players are using the same source code from MPC.

Media Player Classic is the name of the original player project which was founded and overall maintained by "Gabest" before 2007. After that, Doom9 forum continues the project by forking into two brands – Media Player Classic Home Cinema and Media Player Classic Black Edition.

The former(MPC-HC) is based on Casimir666's version aimed to add new features, fixing bugs and updating libraries while the latter(MPC-BE) is a revamped version of the original MPC (Gabest) with prettier interface catering to current aesthetics, updated library and newly added features including gesture control, fonts download, .y4m/.mxf extensions.

Media Player Classic HC or Media Player Classic BE

Generally, from users' perspective, there aren't many big differences between the two players. Some prefer MPC-HC's LAV filters for decoding while others prefer MPC-BE's preview pane on the navigation bar like what YouTube is doing. Both the players support many languages and almost all media files. However, MPC-BE is not as frequently updated as MPC-HC. The latest version of MPC-BE is V1.4.6, and the newest version of MPC-HC has already come to 1.7.10.

The only difference that matters between the two players is the use of LAV Filters. Since Media Player Classic Home Cinema cooperates with LAV filter, it is more efficient in decoding high-res video codecs like HEVC, H.2656/264, VP9/8, which, yet on the other hand results in the less effective support for HW decoding, in comparison with MPC-BE, due to DXVA1.0 incompatibility. Also, MPC-HC is integrated graphics enforced, therefore is more troublesome than MPC-BE in terms of shipping a discrete graphic like MadVR.
In addition, reported by some users, MPC-BE supports WASAPI directly, sends the correct number of audio channels over HDMI to the AVR without any intermediary. MPC-HC on the contrary needs addons to cope with that.

Thus, to sum up, if you are diehard LAV Filter lover, MPC-HC is your better choice. But if you prefer hardware decoding, the convenience of pairing discrete graphics, as well as the preview pane, MPC-BE is your second to none choice.

Its active forks are the Media Player Classic - Home Cinema and the Media Player Classic - Black Edition. All versions of the free media player are maintained by the MPC-HC community at the Doom9 forum.

Powerful media player

Media Player Classic is a media player with built-in codecs for MPEG-2 video. It supports subtitles and codecs for pulse-code modulation, MPEG-2 audio, 3GP, Dolby Digital AC3, and DTS audio. The program also contains a MPEG splitter and a VCD/SVCD/XCD Reader that supports playback VCDs and SVCDs. All its functions are based on the DirectShow architecture so you can find DirectShow decoding filters built-in to the player. The output of this is fast and high-quality decoding and postprocessing of MPEG-4 ASP, H.264, and Flash Video formats.

MPC-HC also supports DirectX Video Acceleration for Intel, NVIDIA, and ATI video cards when you’re using H.264 and VC-1 codec, providing you hardware-acceleration for playback. All these functionalities are compatible with SSE2-capable CPUs and Windows devices running Windows XP or higher. At 13.5 MB, it is a lightweight player for advanced users and professional developers and editors that play various file formats on a regular basis.

Media Player Classic - Black Edition 1.6.4.0 on 32-bit and 64-bit PCs

clsid2/mpc-hc

Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC) is a free and JetBrains Rider License key video and audio player for Windows.

Media player classic black edition is a list of useful options and features that everyone should know about:

You can even download those videos: Menu > File > Save a dbconvert studio crack Tip: to be able to download in best quality with yt-dlp/youtube-dl, it is recommended to also put ffmpeg.exe in the MPC-HC folder.
  • Besides all these (new) features, media player classic black edition, there have also been many bugfixes and internal improvements in the player in the past years that give better performance and stability. It also has updated internal codecs. Support was added for CUE sheets, WebVTT subtitles, etc.

System Requirements

  • Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10 / 11

Media Player Classic media player classic black edition, Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC), and Media Player Classic - Black Edition (MPC-BE) are a family of free and open-source, compact, lightweight, and customizable media players for 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Windows.

Gabest, the main developer of the original version, stated in March 2007 that development of Media Player Classic is not dead but that media player classic black edition was unable to work on it.[5] MPC 6.4.9.0, released March 20, 2006, is the final official version.

Media player classic black edition is also a 64 bit-version of Media Player Classic - Home Cinema for the various Windows x64 platforms.

MPC-HC 1.7.13 is the final version and the program has been officially discontinued as of July 16, 2017, due to a shortage media player classic black edition active developers with C/C++ experience.[17] Its source code on GitHub was last updated on August 27, 2017, a month and a half after the official final version.[18]

Updated fork[edit]

MPC-HC 1.7.xx Maintenance versions released, bug fixes.

MPC-HC 1.8.xx BitTorrent Pro 7.11 Crack + MOD Download for Android integration, maintenance, bug fixes.

MPC-HC 1.9.xx Black Theme added, modern toolbars, better subtitle handling, video preview on seekbar, improved translations, various small features, maintenance, bug fixes.

Updated builds of MPC-HC, media player classic black edition fork from the same developer (known as clsid2 on GitHub/SourceForge) responsible for MPC 6.4.9.1, started appearing in January 2018. This fork contains updated internal codecs (LAV Filters), Media player classic black edition support, youtube-dl integration, a new dark theme, video preview on seekbar, support for MPC Video Renderer, A-B Repeat, subtitle performance improvements, updates to some other external components, media player classic black edition, other improvements, and many bug fixes;[19][20] support for Windows XP was also dropped in these builds.[19] Binary releases are available,[8] as well as source code.[21]

Supported media formats within the latest builds of MPC-HC media player classic black edition MPC-BE have been considerably expanded compared to the original MPC, as these builds are bundled with iterations of libavcodec and media player classic black edition. MPC-HC version 1.7.0 and newer utilize LAV filters,[32] while MPC-BE uses FFmpeg directly.[33] Consequently, they support all formats from those libraries.

MPC-HC is also one of the first media players to support Dolby Atmos audio natively, media player classic black edition.

MPC can use an INI file in its application folder,[34] making it a portable application.

DirectShow[edit]

Media Player Classic is primarily based on the DirectShow architecture and therefore automatically uses installed DirectShow decoding filters. For instance, after the open source DirectShow decoding filter ffdshow media player classic black edition been installed, fast and high quality decoding and postprocessing of the MPEG-4 ASP, H.264, and Flash Video formats is available in the original MPC.

In addition to DirectShow, MPC can also use the QuickTime, RealPlayer, and SHOUTcast codecs and filters (if installed on the computer) to play their native files.[35] Though some of these files may play without the external codecs or filters installed, media player classic black edition. Media player classic black edition, QuickTime Alternative and Real Alternative can be used in place of their passfab iphone unlocker free download Activators Patch installations for expanded support of their respective file formats.

TV tuners[edit]

MPC supports playback and recording of television if a supported TV tuner is installed.
